MDA and IAFF 266

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. MDA is funded almost entirely by individual private contributions and cooperating organizations.

Mansfield Fire Fighters hold an annual "Fill-the-Boot" fundraiser for MDA. Each year the fundraiser is held during the month of August and wraps up in time for MDA's annual telethon on Labor Day. Fire fighters across the country have been advocates of the MDA since 1954.

2012 MDA Camp

Mansfield Firefighters Compete in Cook-off for MDA Campers

On Monday, June 18th 2012 4 teams of Mansfield Firefighters competed in a campfire cook-off at Camp Cheerful in Strongsville, Ohio. The Firefighters’ cook-off was judged by 120 hungry campers who are spending the week at the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual summer camp.

The 4 firefighter teams were led by Jim Komives, Matt Reip, Dan Crow and Ryan Landin. Family and friends helped prepare and serve the food. The rules of the cook-off were simple: prepare the entire meal over the campfire. The teams arrived early to start their fires and prep their food. A passing afternoon thunderstorm wasn’t enough to delay the competition. Dinner was served promptly at 6pm.

The competing dishes were Chicken Fajitas, a Grilled Chicken Breast with Bacon, Roasted Red Pepper and Spinach, Sliders, and a “Banana Boat” dessert (grilled bananas in peel, stuffed with chocolate chips and marshmallows.) The campers chose the Sliders cooked by Dan Crow as the winning dish. The Banana Boat dessert came in close second.

“It’s really great to see all the kids having such a good time,” Ryan Landin, MDA Coordinator for Local 266, “we like to get our here and compete, but we all go home winners when the kids get a good meal and have a great experience.”

2011 MDA Fill-the-Boot Drive Announcement

The 2011 MDA Boot Drive will be held on

Friday, September 2, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

We will meet at Station 1 around 8:30-8:45 so we have some time to distribute boots and figure out logistics.

If you can only show up for 30 minutes, 2 hours or all 6 hours that would be great! Any help is appreciated. We are collecting only 1 day this year, so we only get one shot. If you show up sometime in middle we will have extra boots at Station 1.

We will try and to focus our attention on the square, but if we get enough guys to show, we can hit some other spots in town too. Hopefully, we will have a good showing this year. Contact Landin with questions.

T-Shirts and Lunch Provided.

2010 MDA Iron Chef

Burwell and Komives Win FF Iron Chef

Congratulations to Brad Burwell and Jim Komives for winning the first ever Fire Fighter Iron Chef challenge at this year’s MDA camp. The 130 campers voted Jim and Brad’s dish their favorite by a landslide. The competition was held June 22, in Strongsville. Four teams participated including one other local 266 team consisting of Crow, Yerian and Meilinger. The other teams were fielded by Cleveland and a group of fire fighters from Maple Heights, Shaker Heights and Strongsville. The winning team served grilled chicken and asparagus, probably some recipe Komives stole from Rachel Ray. It was really good and they deserved to win. It was a lot of fun and the kids really enjoyed it.

2010 MDA Cookout

2010 MDA Cookout at Station 4

On Tuesday, June 8, 2010 the Mansfield Firefighters hosted a cookout for local families associated with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The event was attended by 2 dozen people. Firefighters grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and had an ice cream bar. Fire station and truck tours were given and games were played with the kids. A big thanks to the Tagers for doing all the cooking! This was the second year that we held the cookout at Station 4, and the attendance was doubled from last year. We hope to do more events in the future for our local MDA families. Mansfield Firefighters hold a fill-the-boot fundraising drive each year around labor day weekend to coincide with MDA’s national telethon. Over the past 2 years the citizens of Mansfield have donated over $10,000 for this cause. The annual fundraising collected locally goes to help send the kids to camp each year as well as pay for treatments and other needs.
